Notorious 1980s drug dealer arrested in NYC

The Associated Press

Posted: 1:54pm on May 17, 2012; Modified: 2:01pm on May 17, 20122012-05-17T21:01:49Z

Police and prosecutors say a notorious 1980s drug dealer who was so good at hiding his identity that he was known as "the ghost" has been arrested along with dozens of others.

Authorities said Thursday that James Corley was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance. Police say he was part of a street crew called the Supreme Team that was responsible for the shooting of Officer Edward Byrne in 1988. Corley wasn't charged in that killing.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says Corley insulated himself from the operation in Queens. Kelly says Corley never drove a car and frequently changed his phones. No one knew where he lived.

An undercover operation tracked the crew for 15 months through wiretaps and surveillance.

A call to his lawyer wasn't immediately returned.
