Firefighters union set to release statement
November 06, 2009
BOURNE -- The local executive board of the Professional Fire Fighters Union is set to meet this morning to draft a statement on the ongoing controversy involving the fire department and the growing rift between firefighters and town hall, union officials said yesterday.
The controversy includes a police investigation involving a high-ranking fire department official, an affordable veterinary clinic being conducted in one of the fire stations, and rape charges levied against another high-ranking fire department official.
Union officials had planned to release a statement Monday night after a union meeting but they held off. They then planned to issue a statement after Tuesday night's selectmen meeting but it was delayed again after Bourne Police Chief Earl Baldwin revealed at the selectmen meeting that Bourne fire Lt. Kelli Weeks had "appeared at a drug surveillance operation" conducted by the Bourne police.
After Baldwin's revelation, a meeting of the union's executive board was called to draft an updated statement, union officials said.
During Tuesday's selectmen's meeting, Baldwin said Weeks was not arrested and there was no probable cause to pull her over or search her vehicle after she appeared at the surveillance operation. No hand-to-hand drug transaction was observed, Baldwin said.
Baldwin has stated emphatically that the police department did not investigate Weeks following the incident. Town officials have declined to comment on Weeks.
Baldwin added Wednesday that Weeks was spotted during the surveillance operation in a Bourne Fire Department "truck" and she was identified by officers a short distance from the sting location.
