Hopes that the stock market was nearing a bottom were crushed Thursday as the Dow Jones industrials average closed down 679 points, or 7 percent, at 8,579 - the lowest reading since 2003.
Here's how some Philadelphia-area companies fared:
* Campbell Soup Co. closed down 8 percent at $34.65.
* Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ:CMCSA, CMCSK) closed down 4 percent at $16.31.
* Pain drug maker Cephalon (NASDAQ:CEPH) closed down 3 percent at $64.20.
* Pep Boys - Manny Moe & Jack closed down 8 percent at $4.65.
* Radian Group Inc. closed down 31 percent at $2.46.
* Tastykake-maker Tasty Baking Co. (NASDAQ:TSTY) closed up less than 1 percent at $3.61.
* Luxury home builder Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL) closed down 7 percent at $18.87.
