Men enter pleas in unrelated murders
By Drew Brooks
Staff writer
Two men pleaded guilty today to charges in unrelated murders.
Bakhiya Alvin Douglas, 35, and William Clay Cunliffe, 22, each had hearings where they accepted plea deals in Cumberland County Superior Court.
Douglas pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and selling and delivering a counterfeit controlled substance. In return for his pleas and cooperation at a trial of a codefendant in January, charges of second-degree murder and possession with intent to sell and deliver a counterfeit controlled substance were dismissed.
Douglas will not be sentenced until after he cooperates with prosecutors during the trial of Nathaniel Leroy Solomon.
Douglas, Solomon and Brant Sherwood Hunter were each charged in the April 2006 killing of Curtis Green.
Assistant District Attorney Cal Colyer said Green was beaten to death at a home in Hope Mills and left on the side of the road because of an argument between drug dealers who operated in the town.
Hunter, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in August and was sentenced to between 12 years, seven months and 15 years, 11 months in prison.
Douglas faces a maximum penalty of four years, 11 months in prison.
Cunliffe pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of justice. In return, a charge of being an accessory after the fact to murder was dismissed.
He was sentenced to 45 days in prison, but will not have to serve time so long as he completes a year of unsupervised probation and pays court costs.
Cunliffe was one of four people charged in the killing of 36-year-old Tremayne Hubbard at the Tropical Motel on Bragg Boulevard in October 2007.
Cunliffe's involvement was limited to driving suspects to and from the murder and then lying to police about his involvement, Colyer said.
Hubbard was killed after Ashley Pilgrim called the men to the motel, where she was in a room with Hubbard. She alleged he was attempting to sexually assault her.
When the men arrived, 19-year-old Julian Armond Stocks shot at Hubbard, killing him, Colyer said.
Cunliffe's lawyer, P.R. Moss, said he was unaware Stocks had a weapon and thought they were only going to the motel to help Pilgrim.
"It was very dramatic," Moss said. "They thought that they were going to rescue her."
In October, Pilgrim, 21, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of justice and received a year of probation.
Stocks previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to between three years, two months and four years, seven months in prison.
The final codefendant, Earndra Z. Hines, 27, also previously pleaded guilty to assault and larceny charges and received between three years, one month and four years, six months in prison.Staff writer Drew Brooks can be reached at brooksd@fayobserver.com or 486-3567.
