THE son of Queensland MP Pat Purcell had been dealing drugs to maintain his own habit, a court has been told.
Daniel Purcell, 23, was charged on Saturday with drug trafficking after allegedly being caught with 160 ecstasy tablets in his underpants when his arrest in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley.
Brisbane Magistrates Court was today told Mr Purcell was addicted to ecstasy and that he bought 200 pills a week.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Kerrilee Lovaszy said Mr Purcell would sell 140 to friends and acquaintances, while taking the other 60 himself.
"He told police that he sells the tablets to fund his habit," Sgt Lovaszy said.
Mr Purcell was today released on bail on the condition he report twice weekly to police, and that he agree to random drug testing.
His father and older brother were both in court to support him.
Both declined to comment outside court but Mr Purcell's barrister Mark Green told the court his family was "committed to providing every support possible" for their son.
Mr Purcell will reappear in court in August.
