A traffic stop on Interstate 77 south has yielded nearly a half-million dollars worth of marijuana, Iredell County Sheriff Phil Redmond said.
Steven Mitchell Galati of Monsey, N.Y., was charged with trafficking marijuana.
The Iredell County Interstate Team stopped a 2001 Suzuki Vitara for a traffic violation Tuesday morning, Redmond said.
During the stop, a sheriff's canine made a positive indication on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics, the sheriff said.
Deputies then conducted a hand search, during which a non-factory compartment containing 20 pounds of compressed marijuana was located, Redmond said.
The street value of the marijuana is $400,000.
Galati remains in the Iredell County Detention Center in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
This case is still under investigation by the Iredell County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division. Subscribe to the Newspaper
