The Cheboygan River was a crowded place early Thursday afternoon, when many vessels were working the entrance to the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Huron. Sizable ships of note included (from left) the U.S. Geological Survey's Grayling, Ryba Marine's tug Tenacious, secured to a company barge, the gasoline tanker Great Lakes, pushed by the tug Michigan, and the Plaunt Transportation Company's ferry Kristen D headed for Bois Blanc Island. In the background, downriver, are Lower Lakes Towing Ltd.'s self-unloading bulk carrier Maumee, delivering stone to the Ryba Dock, and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, making port from its first buoytending run of the season.
